10K Lives Saved: Burgh’s Adoption Story

10K Lives Saved: Burgh’s Adoption Story

Burgh's FUReverBurgh (formerly known as Meredith) is a deaf lab mix who came into rescue in Arkansas in the summer of 2016 and lived with Lauren, a foster whose husband and 7 dogs were all also deaf. Lauren taught Burgh signs to help humans communicate with her and kept her through heartworm treatment until she was ready to travel north to Massachusetts for adoption.

In MA, Burgh met Maura, who had never fostered a deaf dog before but is always up for a challenge. Burg liked to chase and bark at anything with wheels, so walks and car rides were frustrating and stressful. Maura was able to take Burgh to training classes that taught them both a lot and helped Burgh enjoy much calmer walks.

After two failed adoptions, the third time was the charm for Burgh when she met Kim and Eric, who remember her as “the squirmiest, happiest, most wiggly lab mix who just wants belly rubs.” After taking Burgh home, they continued to work with her on her anxiety and leash reactivity. After two years, they have seen incredible improvement and Burgh now has a human baby brother that she has learned to love and play gentle tug of war with.

Fun facts about Burgh:

  • Burgh is a chimera (in simple terms – a genetic anomaly where one animal has cells derived from two different cell lines), which was discovered when her adopters tried to DNA test her.
  • Her name is short for Pittsburgh, as her adopters had just moved from there to Boston.
  • Burgh’s foster, Maura, and her adopters, Kim and Eric, have kept in contact and are good friends, Maura has been able to visit Burgh lots!
