03 May Service Trip 2024: Day 2 – Sheridan
Day 2: Sheridan
By Rachel Litton
I woke up before my alarm, eager to start our second shelter day of the trip. This was also my second time visiting Sheridan, so I was excited to be somewhere familiar. Even though it was a rainy start, all the volunteers showed up smiling and eager to start work. Upon arrival, we were greeted by a chorus of barks and wagging tails. This sweet pup, Taz, was recovering from a leg injury, so I got some snuggles while his kennel was cleaned.
Last year, most of the group spent the whole day at Sheridan laying a concrete foundation for new kennels. It was so exciting to see the kennels completed with an all-new roof covering. This created so much new space for the dogs to spend time, with more protection from the elements.
This year, we focused our efforts on deep-cleaning all of the kennels and spending quality time with each dog. Some of the pups even had a chance to run in the play yard and roll around in fresh puddles! It was great to see the dogs so happy and looking well. It was apparent that the folks who work and volunteer at the shelter care deeply for the dogs.
Throughout the day, I witnessed the resilience and spirit of these incredible dogs. Despite their past hardships, they radiated love and excitement. I am leaving the 2024 Service Trip feeling motivated and energized to continue volunteering and fostering.
